The campfire was dimly lit with the last dying embers. For the lack of light, the night sky was stunningly filled with hundreds of stars, and a cool but pleasant wind blew by. It was here that Reigen found himself deep in thought. Or rather, his mind was abuzz with various, random thoughts. So much so that sleep evaded him, despite being worn out from earlier that evening and the day before. He took a long drag from his cigarette, held the smoke in, then exhaled in a slow, drawn-out sigh. He stared at nothing, blankly, until the sound of a tent gently unzipping caught his attention. Shigeo peeked out carefully, visibly relaxing when he recognized Reigen sitting nearby.

“Oh, hey Mob. Couldn’t sleep either?” he said in a low voice, motioning for Shigeo to sit next to him. The teen gladly obliged, and said nothing for a moment.

“What are you doing awake, Master?” he finally asked.

“Eh, just lost in thought, I guess.” Reigen took the cigarette from his mouth and stubbed it against the sole of his shoe before tossing it into the cinders of the campfire. The last embers glowed brighter with the new addition briefly before dying out completely. “What about you?” Shigeo watched his actions carefully, taking a moment before answering.

    “Same.”

    “Hm.”

They were both quiet before Reigen spoke up again. “If you're concerned about it, I only have one or two smokes a day now. Didn't get my fix this morning, so…” he trailed off, but Shigeo only shook his head.

    “It's okay.”

More silence filled the air as they both considered what to say.

“But man, I am not looking forward to going back to work! I could stay out here forever, y’know?” The older man leaned back on his palms and gazed up at the sky. “I mean, just look at this place. It’s incredible.”

Shigeo mumbled something then, and Reigen glanced down at him. “Come again?”

“I said ‘thank you’. For bringing us together out here. It is really nice,” Shigeo repeated, keeping his gaze on the ashes of their campfire. Reigen smirked a little. He raised a hand and ruffled Shigeo’s hair.

“I should probably be the one thanking you, though. Our party mainly consists of you and your friends and brother, after all.” His student shrugged, then began fixing his hair. He dropped his hands into his lap afterwards, gazing up at the stars.

“You said you knew some constellations, right?”

“Oh yeah! I had some interest in them when I was younger. What about you?”

Shigeo looked almost sheepish as he replied, “I only know one or two of them. Ritsu knows a whole bunch, though.”

“I see,” Reigen said to himself mostly, but moved a little closer to Shigeo and pointed upward. “Well, I can show you a few, if you’d like. See Orion’s Belt and Betelgeuse, there?”

“Oh, I know those two,” he nodded.

“Thought so! They’re pretty recognizable. But look to the right and you’ll see Bellatrix, and below it is Rigel. It’s all part of the Orion Nebula. And if you look downwards and to the left just a bit, you’ll see Sirius, which makes up part of Canis Major. My favorite, unsurprisingly!” he looked to and winked at Shigeo before continuing pointing the various star formations out.

Reigen was unsure how long he’d been naming off constellations before he felt a gentle thump against his shoulder. Glancing over, Shigeo had fallen asleep against him, peaceful and relaxing as the setting had been.

“Mob, it’s time to head back to your bed. Come on,” he shook him a little bit, earning a small, irritated moan and the teen only snuggling against his shoulder even more. Reigen watched with mild amusement before sighing and shaking his head.

“Geez… you know I can’t keep doing this for you. You’re getting too big.”

Knowing his back and arms would be protesting tomorrow, he slipped his arms on Shigeo’s back and under his knees and lifted him up gingerly. Being careful not to jostle him too much (and thankful that his student had left the tent flap open for easy access), he managed to get him tucked in his sleeping bag, then exited and zipped the tent flaps back up. He stared at the tent for a few seconds, then turned away and pulled the packet of cigarettes out of his pocket. But he hesitated before putting them away with another sigh, heading back to his own tent for some well-needed rest.

“I can’t believe we almost had to drag you out of bed this morning! Going to bed so late… you’re supposedly the responsible one, aren’t you?” Ritsu accused, trudging along with Shigeo’s arm slung over his shoulder. The bus stop was still a fair distance away, and the lack of sleep for the better part of the night had halved his older brother’s stamina. Reigen purposely yawned loudly and obnoxiously, then grinned at Ritsu.

“Some of us have more important things to do in the middle of the night, if you can believe it.”

“Tch, yeah right.”

“Maybe he had some extra energy leftover from all the excitement! I, for one, thought this was a great experience. It was nice to get away from life for a while, “Teru chimed in.

“I gotta go with Blondie, here. That was a lot of fun!” Shou agreed, the nickname earning him a dismayed look from said blond-haired esper. They reached the bus stop after a few more minutes of walking, and Shigeo slumped down onto the bench with a quiet “thank you” to Ritsu.

“I’d never been out camping before. I think we should do something like this again sometime soon,” Serizawa joined in as he set his bag down at his feet. Shou hopped in place a little.

“I know! We could go to America! Or even Disneyland!” Reigen grimaced at the thought of how much money would be spent on either of those trips.

“Yeah, no. I’ll let you know if I figure out something that isn’t going to cost me an arm and a leg, alright?”

“Well, there is still a lot of time left for the summer vacation. Why not, like, the beach?” Teru added helpfully. “There are plenty of fishing opportunities there, too.”

“I think we’ve had enough of fishing for a while, thanks,” Ritsu responded as he sat down next to Shigeo, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. “Still, that’s not really a bad idea.”

“Yeah, and we could camp for longer than two nights, too,” Serizawa said with a smile. Reigen smirked a little at all of the suggestions. The bus pulled up a moment later, and everyone picked up their bags to board.

“Oh! I know! Let’s climb Mt. Fuji!” Shou suddenly called out. Everyone laughed, then, when Shigeo let out a dread-filled groan.

“It’s definitely worth considering,” Reigen said after a moment of thought. “Regardless, this was something I wouldn’t mind doing again.”

And the rest of the group was inclined to agree.
